TANGIBLE SYMBOL SYSTEMS

For many years, The Light House has been creating communications solutions commonly known as object calendars and schedule boxes. These "Tangible Symbol Systems" are valuable learning and communication aids for both the blind/visually impaired and individuals with multiple disabilities alike. With visual or dual sensory impairments and cognitive delays, learners are able to manipulate real, three-dimensional tactile objects (affixed to cards) to receive information and communicate with others. Not only do the devices support the development of communication but also  help to facilitate transitions by easing anxiety by creating shared understanding of schedules and sequence of events.
